Decennial census and the learning of Chinese language and culture
On May 11, 2021 two news came out on the same date: the results of the 7th Chinese national decennial census were announced. China's total population is more than 1411 million, with November 1, 2020 as the reference date. China is still the most populous country in the world. The average age of the Chinese population is now 38.8 years old. The average population of each household is 2.62 persons. Family households continue to shrink. I’d like to share the following interesting statistics, among the whole Chinese population:
the male population is about 723 million, accounting for 51,24%
the population of 65+ is about 190 million, accounting for 13,5%
the population living in cities and towns is about 902 million, accounting for 63,89%
the population of the eastern region accounts for 39,93%
the population with university education is about 218 million, accounts for 15,47%
the Illiteracy rate is 2,67%.
Another news from Dutch central television NPO appeared on the same date. It was a talk about the learning of Chinese language and culture. It is reported that more than 260 VWO students at Dutch middle schools took part in the recent exams of Chinese proficiency. Nine years ago, only 20 students did that, so there is a large increase in the number of VWO Chinese language students who actively took the exam, which is an encouraging news for me as a teacher of Chinese language and culture. I have taught MBO students business Chinese, I know that the vocational school students are also busy in learning Chinese language and culture. Chinese as one of the United Nation working languages, plays an important role in the world’s development. The NPO speakers let know that their children have been learning Chinese, and China is a big and important country and will be more important soon.
Yes, 1 of every 5,5 persons speaks Chinese, welcome to become a member of language plaza Sunbird culture club, join our regular talks and to know a bit more about the big country.
